Delta del Llobregat Nature Area

Share:

The natural areas of the Llobregat delta are a network of protected areas that belong to the municipalities of El Prat de Llobregat, Viladecans, Gavà and Sant Boi de Llobregat, near Barcelona city.

When you visit them, you will be surprised at the great biological diversity that they can accommodate. They are placed close to farming fields, surrounded by some of the most important infrastructures in the country and near the main metropolitan cities. We can find different natural environments: the final part of the river Llobregat, lagoons and wetlands, coastal pine groves on dunes, and virgin beaches with dune vegetation, almost unique in Catalonia. They are significant areas for their fauna, especially for aquatic birds, because they are located just in the middle of the birds’ migratory route that goes form Northern Europe to Africa. They have extremely valuable vegetation including a scarce population of Kosteletzkya pentacarpos in Catalonia and Stachys maritima. Additionally, more than 22 different species of orchids have been found there.

There is no metropolis in the Mediterranean which enjoys marshes of such international relevance. It is a place to visit, to discover the natural environment and to enjoy the landscape, a place where the conditions of observation of flora and fauna are exceptional. And best of all: close to Barcelona!

VISITABLE AREAS:

The natural areas of the Llobregat river (El Prat de Llobregat)

Located on the right bank of the final stretch of the Llobregat river, they occupy about 145 ha and there is a great diversity of flora and fauna. We can find the main landscapes of the Delta: reed beds, wet meadows, pine forests, canyissars, beaches and coastal ponds, such as Cal Tet and Ca l'Arana. These spaces form a miniature Delta.

El Remolar - Philippines and Viladecans beach

It is one of the most emblematic natural spaces, especially because aquatic birds are easily observed, such as bernats pescaires, sea crows, ducks, fredelugues or martinets. In spring and summer, the limícoles fill the sea. This space occupies 188 ha and includes the Remolar pond, the Filipines maresma, the Sant Climent stream, the Pineda de Cal Francés, a pine forest, and a part of the Viladecans beach.

La Pineda de Can Camins and El Prat beach

With 48 ha, they form a coastal area of high biological value, very rare in our country. The pinyer pine forest grows on the old dunes of the beach and builds a magnificent shelter for a great diversity of fauna and flora. On the beach we find some threatened species, which need the vegetation of the sorrals to live.

Les Basses de Can Dimoni (Sant Boi de Llobregat)

They are a set of three lagoons in the agricultural area of Sant Boi de Llobregat. With a total area of 31 ha, they constitute an interesting space due to the biodiversity they host and, especially, for the function of sleeper for martinets and esplugabous.

L'estany de la Murtra and Pineda de la Maiola (Gavá and Viladecans)

The Murtra pond, between the municipalities of Gavà and Viladecans, has recovered part of its typical vegetation and, together with the cultivated fields, is the habitat of species such as the martinet menut, the kingfisher and the small corriol. La Pineda de la Maiola, in Gavà, preserves examples of pine forests on coastal dunes and interdunar reed beds, and is the habitat of different forest birds.
